The House of the Devil (2009) streaming on Shudder. This is very convincing as a retro 80s occult slasher movie. It’s also very dedicated to its slow burn buildup of tension, with carefully revealed flashes of menace preceding extended scenes where you are almost tempted to believe that everything could be normal. A whole lot of action and shock is packed into the final 20 minutes. Great performances from an interesting cast. Overall a very interesting exercise that doesn’t end up with much to say.
